The Best Time to Tweet

Do you know what the best time to tweet is? It turns out, it depends, but perhaps not as much as you imagine. According to a study done by Buffer (which I mention here as one of the best free tools to manage your social media), the most popular times for tweeting may not be the best for engaging people.

On average, most tweets occur between 11AM and 1PM local time. With so many tweets blazing by in your audience’s twitter feed, it may be that your fabulous tweet just rolls on by, unseen.

On the other hand, if you’re tweeting during a “normal” work day,  you might be missing out as well. People may be checking your twitter feed on their iPhone underneath their desks, but they’re supposed to be working and that makes it harder for people to engage.

So when is the best time to tweet? According to the article on Buffer:

  • Based on all of the tweet data we have collected, the early morning hours appear to be the time in which tweets receive the most clicks, on average.
  • Evenings and late at night are the times when your tweets receive the most favorites and retweets, on average.
  • In some cases, times with the highest amount of average engagement are almost inversely related to the most popular times to tweet.

By early morning hours, they mean early! According to the study, the highest number of clicks was between 2 and 4 in the morning and the lowest was between 9 AM and 1 PM. As far as engagement, including retweets, likes and replies, that happens between 11 PM and 5 AM.

Honestly, I will be experimenting to find out what works best for me. It is hard for me to imagine you sitting out there at 3 AM, waiting to favorite a tweet I’m sending. If you’re up at 3 AM, there’s a good chance you are at the gym or working on your business. I suppose I could be wrong, though. It’s happened before.

That being said, I will keep you updated on what I find works best for me. And if you have found something that works well for you, please share in the comments below.
